Abstract

This research aims to investigate the effect of animated video as a learning medium on the critical thinking skills of fourth-grade students at SDN Pasirbenteng I in the subject of Science and Social Studies (IPAS), focusing on the topic of Hindu-Buddhist kingdoms. The study was conducted in response to the low level of students’ critical thinking, which is often attributed to conventional and teacher-centered teaching methods. A quantitative approach was applied using a pre-experimental design with one group pretest-posttest. Fourteen students participated in the study. The research instrument consisted of essay questions assessing three indicators of critical thinking: interpretation, analysis, and evaluation. Data analysis was carried out using the Shapiro-Wilk test for normality, a paired sample t-test for hypothesis testing, and the normalized gain (N-Gain) test to measure learning improvement. The results revealed a significant difference between students’ pretest and posttest scores after using animated video media. The paired sample t-test showed a significance value of 0.000 (< 0.05), indicating a statistically significant effect. Additionally, the average N-Gain score of 0.58 falls into the medium category. These findings demonstrate that the use of animated video as a learning medium has a significant and positive impact on improving students' critical thinking skills in IPAS learning.
